Attention YSL Parents: Races at Bridger Bowl This Weekend

Parents and athletes, It is going to be another busy weekend of racing.  There are a lot of entries, and we are going to need your help to keep kids on time for inspections and their race runs.

• Friday will be a training day, and we will train as a team.  Team order will be determined Friday morning at the team captains' meeting. The race organizers are going to try and get two training runs off and maybe three. Friday we will stick together as a team so parents will have a little more freedom that day.
• Everyday athletes need to be in the Jim Bridger Lodge before 8:30 for a team meeting to get details on time of inspections and start times. Coaches will also give athletes their lift tickets and race bibs for the day.
• Friday and Saturday we will watch video and wax skis after training and race day at 15760 Bridger Canyon Road in the garage. When leaving Bridger Bowl, turn right towards Bozeman; almost immediately turn left; proceed up the driveway and veer to the right; the driveway ends at the house, Thank you Schreiner family!

Parents in Sports

We parents invest money, time, and emotion into youth sports programs including BSSEF's.  The National Association for Sport and Physical Education offers the following suggestions on how we can best channel our involvement for the greatest effect:

1. Let the coaches do the coaching for all team members.
2. Support the program: Volunteer to assist the team outside of coaching.
3. Be your child’s best fan: Positively support your child unconditionally. Acknowledge his or her effort, support of team members, following instruction from coaches, etc.
4. Support and root for all team members: Foster teamwork.
5. Do not bribe or offer incentives. Orient them to the enjoyment of participating and responsibility to the team.
6. Encourage your child to talk with the coaches: If your child is having difficulties in practice or games or can’t make a practice, encourage him or her to speak directly to the coaches.
7. Understand and display appropriate game behavior (e.g., watch; make positive remarks; do not berate pla yers, officials, or coaches): Remember, your child’s self-esteem and game performance is at stake. Be supportive.
8. Monitor your child’s stress level at home: Keep an eye on the player to make sure you are helping your child effectively handle the stress from the various activities in life.
9. Monitor eating and sleeping habits: Be sure your child is eating the proper foods and getting adequate rest.
10. Help your child keep his or her priorities straight: Help your child maintain a balance among schoolwork, family responsibilities, chores, and free time.
11. Keep sport in its proper perspective: Sport should be fun for you and your child. Highly skilled children and their parents must be especially careful to maintain a balanced view.
12. If your child’s performance produces strong emotions in you, maintain a calm demeanor. Your relationship with your child remains long after competitive sport days are over. Keep your goals and needs separate from your child’s experience.
13. Reality test: If your child has come off the field when their team has lost, but has played their best, help them to see this as a “win.” Remind your child to focus on “process” and not only “results.” Fun and satisfaction should be derived from “striving to win” and playing well and hard.
14. Have fun.

Nordic Team Update

Here is a reminder regarding upcoming practices and competitions:

• January 31st - synchronized skiing, maneuver transitions between poling techniques, and games; meet at Lone Mountain Ranch
• February 2nd - longer ski to get ready for Spam cup and relay races; meet at Chapel
• February 7th - longer ski to get ready for Spam cup, step turns, transitions, and speed work; meet at Ranch
• February 9th - waxing for the race and slow ski around the Ranch; meet at Lone Mountain Ranch
• February 11th - Spam Cup #2 1k, 5k, 10k, and 15k
• February 11th - Taste of the Trails following the Spam Cup races
• February 25th - Gallatin Glissade 2k, 10k, and 20k; major fundraiser for BSSEF. Spread the word!
• March 3rd - Yellowstone Rendezvous Race

Big Sky Speed Camp is Full

Jeremy Ueland says that the SG speed camp is fully subscribed.  Unfortunately, there is no room for any additional participants.

Seeking Volunteers for Lone Peak Super Speed Series at Big Sky

We're seeking volunteers for the SG series on Hangman's at Big Sky on February 10-12.  If you are interested, please complete and submit the online form here.

YSL SG/GS Kombi at Bridger Bowl

We have another race coming up February 3-5 at Bridger Bowl.  It will be a SG/GS Kombi (see presentation embedded below).  There will be mandatory training on Friday; two races on Saturday, and one race on Sunday.  If you plan to attend email Becca Friedlander (YSL atheletes) or email Jeremy Ueland (Buddy Werner athletes) by Monday, January 30th.

Volunteers Needed for Western Region Masters Championships

BSSEF and Big Sky Resort are hosting the Western Region Masters Championships on February 2-5, and we need volunteers.  If you are interested, please contact Jeremy Ueland.

More Info on Speed Camp at Big Sky

Big Sky is hosting a speed camp on February 8-9 for athletes racing in the Super-G races on February 10-12.

• Drills and training runs will be conducted on the Hangman's SG course.
• Athletes must attend both sessions, as training is progressive.  Wednesday (2/8) 12 noon – 3:30pm; and Thursday (2/9) 9:00 am – 12 noon.
• The coaches recommend that you get on your skis Wednesday morning if you have not already skied on them this year.
• Athletes who have preregistered via email should register and pay Wednesday at the Race Shack (at the bottom of the Ramcharger chair lift) between 11:30AM and noon.  The cost for both days is $50.
• We have preregistered 20 athletes so far and have room for 30-35.
• This is a two-day camp.  If you had previously indicated an interest in just one day, please confirm whether or not you are able to make a two-day commitment by sending an email to Tina Coyle at tinacoyle@bresnan.net.
• Athletes can get $44 lift tickets.
• Coaches from both the Missoula team and the Big Sky Ski team will be coaching the camp.
