In addition to the normal slalom and giant slalom races, the upcoming YSL Championships at Big Sky will include a Kombi race. What's a Kombi race? Kombi incorporates continuously changing rhythm and turn radius within the same run. There are two styles: the "technical" style incorporates elements of SL and GS; and the "speed" style incorporates elements of GS and SG. In other words, the technical style has alternating series of slalom and giant slalom gates, while the speed style has alternating sections of GS and Super-G gates. Furthermore, a Kombi race can consist of either a single run or two runs.
Details will be finalized later this week in the formal race announcement. However, coach Jeremy Ueland anticipates the Kombi to be a single run, technical format. Per the following (embedded) USSA Kombi Guidelines presentation, slalom skis are typically recommended for the SL/GS format:
