Jack Moore, the founder of Tognar Toolworks, wrote a nice "how to" article in the February 13, 2008 issue of Ski Racing magazine. You can find a wealth of information about ski repair and tuning offered by Moore here.
The Junior Development team traveled to Red Lodge this past weekend for the Stano Memorial Slaloms, which brought together athletes aged 13 to 24 years old. Held on a tough course befitting the level of competition, Sunday's races were made even tougher by a county-wide power loss. Most of the racers had to hike up the mountain for their second run!
The Big Sky kids did well. On Saturday, 51 women and 70 men started. Bridget French paced the girls with a 3rd overall finish. Melissa Wells was 20th, Madison Bildahl 28th, and Sylvie Henry 30th. For the boys, Graham Foster finished 12th overall, and Connor Lunt was 14th on a course that half the field failed to finish.
As a group, the Big Sky girls did a little better on Sunday: Bridget placed 6th overall out of 51 starters; Madison was 14th; and Melissa and Sylvie placed 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Graham finished 20th overall in the men's race, and Connor joined nearly half of Sunday's 60 starters with a DNF. (He still ended up hiking up the mountain.)

Here is a short video on how to record a gate fault when you are serving as a Gate Judge. Download the sample Gate Judge card for more.
As noted in an earlier post, the Gate Judges's primary responsibility is to ensure that each racer passes through each gate correctly. Although the Gate Judge instruction card helps explain correct passage, the following excerpt from a USSA video illustrates the concept in a bit more detail:
